Floodplain Information
The entire Island lies within a mapped special flood hazard area. The Town participates in the National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Rating System.
Because of the Town's CRS classification, property owners receive a discount on flood insurance premiums for structures in the special flood hazard area.
Elevation certificates on file with the Building Department may be inspected at Town Hall. Owners of older structures may need to have a new certificate prepared by a licensed surveyor.
Before you build, fill, regrade, or alter drainage on your lot, contact the Building Department. Substantial improvements to existing structures may trigger current elevation requirements.
Residents are encouraged to keep drainage swales clear, know their evacuation zone, and review their policy each spring before hurricane season.
